4 swim to shore, 3 rescued after boat and kayak capsize off Jamestown

A center console power boat carrying six people, including two children, capsized Friday evening close to the northern tip of Jamestown on Narragansett Bay, authorities said.

A kayaker in the area also capsized at the same time. Four of the people swam to shore while three were rescued by another vessel, said a spokeswoman for the U.S. Coast Guard, Petty Officer Briana Carter.

Warwick Fire Chief Peter McMichael said that firefighters on the department’s dive team had been sent to the location in waters off the northern end of Conanicut Island but their deployment was aborted following the rescue.

A Coast Guard rescue vessel arrived at the scene and determined everyone was accounted for and safe.

Carter said she had no further information to provide early Friday evening.
